Gustavo Denouard — Echoes of the Cosmos
(Projekt no#, 2026, DL)
by Peter Thelen, Published 2026-04-16
For his third release on the Projekt label, Argentine composer Gustavo Denouard makes the outer reaches of the cosmos his home, with five extended tracks of texture-based shimmering dronescapes that bear enough melodic elements to keep the listener engaged for the duration, illuminated by piano, flutes, percussives, and other sounds, synthesized or otherwise, like the soundtrack to a wondrous dream that carries one far away into the beyond. The album’s centerpiece in the nineteen-minute “Chimes in the Mist,” a powerful and breathtaking immersive sonic experience that floods the foreground with sweeping ribbons of color while the bottom end is anchored by dronal textures, with intermittent percussive sounds that sparkle and fade in and out as the piece proceeds. There are rhythms here involving everything that’s going on at many levels, but no cadences per se, one’s attention can drift from one layer to another at any time, a fully immersive world that has no limits. The remaining four tracks, including the opener “Whispers” are all drone-based as well, each diffused into a distinctly different soundworld with unique highlights, spatial imagery and colors, sweeping through numerous layers, developing slowly as each piece moves through different phases. There are no sharp edges or corners, every sound melts together beautifully in a slow, universal, swirling majesty that triggers the imagination to far-away worlds. All fans of slow-evolving floating ambient sounds should find plenty of interest in Echoes of the Cosmos.
