At Exposé, we focus on progressive and experimental music of various stripes, but we always try to be flexible. You probably won’t catch us reviewing Taylor Swift anytime soon — though if her publicist sent us an album, we’d give it a go. Green Sky Accident is a band from Bergen, Norway, that plays a variety of rock that has some of the drama of post-rock infused into melodic music with a lot of energy. As such, it’s not really what most people would label “progressive rock,” not that such a label would mean much. “Indie rock” means even less, so I’ll set that aside. The group consists of Tore Torgrimsen (guitar, vocals), Stian Mathisen (guitar), Eivin Mjelde (drums), and Svein Grindheim (bass). The songs are intelligently composed and arranged, with a good degree of variety, from the jangly energy of “Insert Coin” and “Sensible Scenes” to the pummeling drums of “In Vain” — though the latter never delves into the metallic assault you might expect from the opening drum part. At times I’m reminded of 90s bands like Semisonic, Dada, The Wallflowers, and even The Church, in what might be described as power pop with some of the edge of grunge. It’s all very well done, and the production hits a nice balance between direct crispness and gauzy reverb that doesn’t obscure the quality of the playing. Daytime TV is sophisticated rock well done, without too much pretense or an overly serious attitude, and is a thoroughly entertaining listen from start to finish.
