Håkon Gebhardt played drums in Motorpsycho from around 1992 (first appearing on Demon Box) to 2005 (I believe The International Tussler Society was his last recording with the band). Since then, he’s relocated to Florence, Italy, and continued his musical endeavors. Geb Heart is the first album under his name alone. This set of ten songs covers a range of sounds from jangly psychedelic pop to twangy Americana and various stops between. Some of the songs sound like they could easily be covers of classics from 1968 or ‘69, with only slight modernizations. As far as I can tell, Gebhardt handles all the instruments and vocals himself, but everything sounds great, with a very organic and natural feeling. All of the songs have great hooks and lovely arrangements, with judicious use of keyboards to complement the guitars. Gebhardt’s vocals are good as well. Some versions of the album include four bonus tracks that break with the overall sound, though not to a degree that diminishes the experience. These instrumental tracks have a somewhat more modern sound, including synthesizers, but they fit in with the mood well enough to not be a distraction. From start to finish, Geb Heart is a fine album that fits in with the more psychedelic side of Motorpsycho.
