Gareth Skinner — Off // Axis
(Kasumuen, 2024, LP)

Off // Axis Cover art

Australian cellist Gareth Skinner has released his first solo album on Kasumuen Records, titled Off // Axis. Gareth is known for playing integral roles in some of the 90s most ‘out there’ acts in Bzark and The Ergot Derivative as well as being a go to guest musician for chart-topping albums by Powderfinger, Bertie Blackman, Something for Kate, Gotye, Wagons, and many more. Recently he has become a full time member of The Sand Pebbles. Assisting Gareth on Off // Axis are some to the top Melbourne musicians: Ben Michael X (Sand Pebbles), Suzie Lou and Drew Caldwell (Disaster Plan, Breather Hole), Joel Silbersher and Sarah Blaby (Double Vanity). In addition to all of his work with other bands, he has been developing is own slightly off-kilter experimental and sometimes haunting music. This is quite a pleasant sonic experience, and in spite of Gareth’s avantgarde tendencies, the results are amazingly engaging. Some songs are quite minimal, evoking comparisons to Laurie Anderson: “Yer Made Up of Not Much” and “Bitching.” Then there is the slow and dark “Oh Delirium” that sounds like it could have been a very sad Current 93 track. Each track features a different glimpse into Gareth’s creative mind. Songs that grabbed my attention are the rocking “Wait By the Side of the Road,” with its razor sharp distorted guitars and the album closer, “The Day You Said Hello to Me,” with choppy synths and phasing filters. This is some wild experimental music that demands your attention.
