Following on from Vloute Panthère (2021), Edredon Sensible is back with another album of musical madness featuring drums and saxophones. Sometimes the saxophones function more as rhythm instruments than melodic ones, so the result is highly energetic. The lineup remains Jean Lacarrière (tenor saxophone), Tristan Charles-Alfred (baritone saxophone), Antoine Perdriolle (drums, percussion), and Mathias Bayle (drums, percussion), and they are joined by a number of guests on one track (all vocalists, I believe). The music could be described as “high-energy minimalism” — the pieces are built from short repeating phrases rather than chords and melodies, and they can groove on their odd patterns in a way that no other group does. Sometimes the two saxes will play interlocking parts, but at other times, one will lock into a phrase while the other goes off on tangents that usually don’t involve conventional soloing. Perdriolle and Bayle typically create their rhythms in ways other than standard drum-kit patterns, with several tracks where there are two snare drums of differing tones placed to the right and left in the mix. You’ll also hear various percussion instruments, but the two mesh together into an eight-limbed monster of groove. They’ve taken the ideas presented on their debut and moved farther along the path away from conventionality, but they play everything with a palpable sense of discovery and fun. Montagne Explosion is a mountainous explosion of creativity.
