Dictator Ship — Electric Jihad
(Bandcamp The Sign SQR 048, 2023, LP / DL)

Electric Jihad Cover art

When I received the Swedish band Dictator Ship’s second album, Electric Jihad, with its cheesy movie poster cover art, I thought that I would be in for some fun. But then October 7 happened and the album title took on an unfortunate new meaning. Putting that aside, the album is a set of 10 energetic and raw hard rock songs reminiscent of the mid 70s. I remember the mid to late 70s music scene as kind of being stuck in the doldrums after bands started moving away from prog rock. Then punk music hit the scene and music started getting interesting again. So I am baffled why a band like Dictator Ship would want to revive this type of hard rock music. The music on Electric Jihad is fairly middle-of-the-road rock, derivative and repetitive from song to song. They appear to lock into one groove and chord set that runs throughout the entire album, which starts to make you feel like the tracks are too long, even though they are mostly in the three to four minute range. The final track, “She Makes Me Wanna,” does show some variation and touches on glam rock, but there really is nothing of note here as well. I suppose that if you did not live through the 70s, you might find this “musical revival” of interest.
