Those who attended NEARfest 2000 certainly won’t forget this performance, which was one of the many highlights of the weekend. For those who have been living in a cave, DFA is a mostly instrumental quartet of guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums with vocals shared by drummer Alberto De Grandis and keyboardist Alberto Bonomi (and at the show there was one song featuring guest vocals by Gianni Leone, but only that song is not on this CD, the rest of the performance is). Their sound is a warm mix of jazz-rock and symphonic styles, leaning more to the former — unique, and sometimes very complex and busy, with brightly colored flashes of melodic bliss. The first few minutes of “Pantera” is a great example of their ability to make mindboggling technical fusion while still delivering the melodic goods; it’s highly complex, but not “difficult listening.” Those not yet familiar with the band would be well advised to start here, as three of the best songs from each of their two studio albums (Lavori in Corso — 1996 and Duty Free Area — 1999) are included on this live disc, which is their first release on their new label, holding them over while they record a brand new studio album. Highly recommended!
