Deuter — Mångata
(Bandcamp no#, 2025, DL)

Mångata Cover art

I know there are lots of people who love the gentle, meditative music of Deuter. He’s made an apparently successful career out of atmospheric melodies and serene chord progressions. But to my ears, Mångata exemplifies everything I dislike about New Age music. I find it vapid and soulless, which might be ironic since so many consider the music so spiritual in nature. I’d guess that Deuter can pump out this stuff in his sleep — certainly there’s nothing here that would keep a listener from nodding off, and it could very well have the same effect on its creator. But hey, if you enjoy this kind of stuff, go for it. You do you, just don’t make me listen to it again. If this is what bliss sounds like, I’ll take angst any day — or joy or love or fun, none of which I hear here.
