Komorebi - Sunlight through Trees Cover art

Most have probably at least heard of Deuter; for some reason we had never to date covered any of his music here at Exposé, even though he has released close to 70 albums over the years since his first in 1971. A self-taught musician, as a child Chaitanya Georg Deuter learned guitar, flute, harmonica, and just about every other instrument he could get his hands on, but it wasn’t until after a near fatal car crash that he decided to pursue a career creating music. His early works combined electric and acoustic elements with a solid Krautrock ethic not unlike early Popol Vuh, though over time his sound became more gentle, combining beautiful tones and ethnic sounds with environmental elements, paving the way for what would come to be called New Age music in the 80s. The seven pieces on Komorebi - Sunlight through Trees are beautifully orchestrated with piano, synthesizer, bowed strings, flute, panpipes, hammered dulcimer, string harp, acoustic guitar, and more, all in service to the powerful melodies. The opening title track is an orchestrated piano piece, followed by the more expansive “Komorebi - The Walk” that carries many of the same themes forward with a more robust set of instrumentation for over ten minutes. The mood throughout is gentle and relaxing, peaceful, and to a degree meditative, though there is enough going on in the compositions and arrangements that one might have a difficult time sleeping through it. Other standouts include “Silent Glow” that meanders through beautiful fountains of colored tones, without any sharp edges or cadence, and “Clairière” where multiple flutes paint a dreamy melody over a skeletal piano until the synthesizers come in and guide the piece toward its nine-minute conclusion. The closer “Anemoi” and its brief follow-on “Anemoi – Touch” take a more minor key approach, seeming to be filled with sadness, though still quite beautiful. There’s an abundance of emotion and beauty buried within the seven tracks at hand, which fit in nicely with Deuter’s recent output.
