Deepspace — The Architecture of Flowers
(Bandcamp no#, 2023, DL)
by Peter Thelen, Published 2024-01-06
While one typically associates architecture with the first stage of a man-made construction (dams, buildings, bridges, etc,) and flowers are natural constructs, the composer has sought to link the two on this 19-track extravagaza of floating ambient sound sculptures. Of course Deepspace is the nom-de-plume of Australia-based ambient composer Mirko Ruckels, who has at least a dozen releases prior to this one, some of which we have reviewed in these pages in the last few years, and several of which are collaborations with TheAdelaidean. He builds his hypnotic, dreamy, glacial, and atmospheric works from synthesizers, software, and heavily processed acoustic instruments like piano, guitars, bells, and percussion. Combining all of these sound sources into swirling worlds of droning ambient sounds that are at once engaging and soothing, not unlike something one would hear from the catalog of Steve Roach, Michael Stearns, Alio Die, or Vidna Obmana. Each of the 19 tracks at hand is a distinct entity, but they flow together well because of a rich sonic similarity that warms the spirit and frees the mind and soul, workng like a perfect backdrop for imaqinative panoramas that could evoke images of space, oceans, deserts, even flowers, which was obviously the catalyst behind Ruckels’ intentions with track titles like “Flying Orchid Airships,” “Blue Lanterns,” “Blossoms at Midnight,” “Pollen Cloud Formations,” and many others that follow Ruckels’ general concept in this double-album length epic. From the deep atmospheric drones to beautifully colored washes of melody criss-crossing as they may, this is an elegant soundworld full of dreamlike spatial qualities that will lure the listener back for many repeat listens.
