Dave Bainbridge — On the Edge (of What Could Be)
(Gonzo Multimedia Open Sky OPENGZ101, 2025, 2CD / 2LP / DL)

On the Edge (of What Could Be) Cover art

Dave Bainbridge has done an excellent job of defining a musical aesthetic over the years, carving out a niche where lush symphonic progressive rock meets romantic Celtic mysticism, and the result is often albums of epic proportions. On the Edge (of What Could Be) is no exception, the latest installment in his journey. Rather than forging into new territory, he continues to refine his existing vision on these twelve tracks spread across a double-CD set that totals more than 80 minutes in length. All of the features that have gained him fans are here in abundance: soaring electric guitar melodies, lush pads of shimmering keyboards, emotive lines on whistles and Uilleann pipes, ethereal vocals, tasty finger-picked guitars and other stringed instruments, and paeans to the beauty of nature in general and Ireland in specific. Bainbridge’s production skills are also formidable, and the album sounds magnificent from a sonic standpoint. While the length is a bit much to take in, I can’t fault any of the tracks, and for listeners unfamiliar with the Bainbridge take on progressive rock, On the Edge (of What Could Be) is a fine place to start.
