Datura 4 — High on the Low Brow

While I'm listening to the newest album from Datura4, I can easily imagine it's 1972. High on the Low Brow would fit comfortably in a set that included ZZ Top, Cactus, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin of that time. It's riff-based rock with a basis in the blues and tons of great guitar, with a large keyboard presence on organ, electric piano, and clavinet. To my ears, it's not just an exercise in nostalgia, however. Dom Mariani and company come by their sound honestly, playing ferociously and creatively within the style. It's to their credit that each of the nine songs has its own identity, with differing keyboard choices, tempos, and ways of putting together the rhythm section. Don't expect any multi-part suites or odd meters, just hard rocking done right.
