Celeste — I Suoni in una Sfera
(Mellow MMP 113, 1973/1992, CD)
by Mike McLatchey, Published 1996-08-01
Celeste's debut album is one of the very best of the Italian progressives, and was highly regarded enough to have been reissued in three countries. Meanwhile, this CD is supposedly a lost soundtrack from 1973, but with all the pops and crackle, it sounds like there must have been an LP they took it from. The music here isn't really like the pastoral debut or the jazzy second, it is a mellow and very simplistic set of short thematic tracks with little or no development. Parts of this are similar to what would later be dubbed "new age" and occasionally the music gets a bit too close to muzak for comfort. As a soundtrack it may have worked well but as an album it's a rather uninteresting relic. The addition of near instrumental versions of songs from the debut is a nice touch and certainly show up the soundtrack music (especially the meandering jazzy improv in "Nodissea"). Overall, this is only recommended to the completist.
