Burnt Belief — Mutual Isolation

Mutual Isolation Cover art

Moving along to the fourth release from Colin Edwin and Jon Durant, Mutual Isolation once again finds the duo working with drummer Vinnie Sabatino, and adds two more musicians into the fold in Andi Pupato (percussion) and Aleksei Saks (trumpet). While the underlying aesthetic remains the same, of atmospheric instrumental music somewhere between rock and jazz, the trumpet adds a distinctive flavor on the tracks where it appears, bringing to mind such artists as Jon Hassell, Mark Isham, Toshinori Kondo, and Arve Henriksen. And maybe it’s my imagination under the influence of the trumpet parts that finds the other tracks taking on a distinct jazzy flavor reminiscent of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays. Durant is credited with keyboards this time out, and the parts for piano (electric and acoustic) further the Metheny / Mays impression, even while his guitar playing is not especially Metheny-like. Edwin trades his electric basses for acoustic this time out, emphasizing the jazz flavor while leaving the basic feel the same as before. Anyone looking for some beautiful music that isn’t sappy or soporific should check out Mutual Isolation — it’s a thoroughly enjoyable listen from start to finish.
