As I began listening to All Roads Lead Me Back for the first time, I almost wrote this album off based on the first two or three songs. But I let it keep playing and all of a sudden, I was hooked. Bedsit Poets is the duo of New York City based Brit ex-pats Amanda Thorpe (vocals, loops, guitar, keyboards, and melodica) and Edward Rogers (vocals, loops, and also one half of Rogers and Butler). They are aided by Don Piper (guitar, vocals, keyboards, percussion, and mandolin), Sal Maida (bass), James Mastro (guitar), Joe McGinty (piano and organ), Konrad Meissner (drums), Mac Randall (guitar), Ray Sapirstein (French horn and flugelhorn), Tony Scherr (upright bass), and Yair Schleider (piano and organ). The album kicks off with “Come See About Me,” which is not the Supremes’ 60s hit, but instead a funk pop song that threw me off. “London Town” follows, a slow moody song that did not excite me. Then “Pelican Club” hit with its edginess that started to turn things around for me, followed by “Scarecrow.” Now I am starting to appreciate Amanda Thorpe’s beautiful voice that makes me think of Linda Ronstadt as well as the Mamas and Papas. Which leads to one of the album’s highlights, “Shadows into Ashes.” Edward takes lead vocals with Amanda backing for this catchy song. Other highlights include the raucous and fun “The Dark Night” with its throbbing bass, the edgy song “The Ragpicker,” and the moody 60s folk rocker “December My Dear.” So don’t make the same mistake as I did. Give All Roads Lead Me Back your full attention and you won’t be disappointed.
