Salute the Dawn Cover art

Astrospaecion is a musical project featuring Alline Ohara on vocals and Dan Mumm playing all of the instruments; they write the music together, aiming for a classic art rock sound. Salute the Dawn includes seven tracks totaling a bit under a half hour of music. Ohara’s voice is of course the focal point most of the time — the songs are generally under five minutes long, without lengthy instrumental sections — and she has a pleasant and expressive tone. There are brief occasions where she reminds me very slightly of Annie Haslam, though I wouldn’t push that comparison too far. Another reference might be Leslie Hunt of District 97. Her lower register is especially rich, only a little breathy. “Voices from the Mountains” also includes multiple lovely harmony parts. Mumm’s instrumental backing consists mainly of guitar, bass, and drums, and his guitar work in particular is quite tasty, especially with the intricate arpeggiated rhythm parts, which have a touch of folk influence to them, slightly reminiscent of Richard Thompson at times. He doesn’t often venture into heavier tones, though the title track is a good example of where the music builds up to a crunchy climax. Keyboards appear only sparingly, adding a little variation in color. All in all, this is an auspicious debut for Astrospaecion, and I look forward to hearing what they come up with next.
