Keith Jones over at Fruits de Mer Records never ceases to amaze me with the music and artists he brings to the label. In this instance, he has discovered US singer-songwriter Arnald Paul on YouTube. During the 2020 lockdown Arnald revisited a number of songs that he composed over the years and Keith decided to release them as a 7-song 10” lathe cut vinyl Transparent Ideation plus a 20-track DVD Yellow Facet Lime, a video companion. In typical fashion, this lathe cut release was over subscribed, so only a few lucky people around the world won the competition to purchase a copy. (Full disclosure: I was not one of the chosen, instead I received a promo CDr so I could experience the music and write this review.) Arnald recorded the music on a 4-track analog cassette deck (do you remember those?) over nearly 30 years! Upon listening to the music, Arnald has obviously been influenced by Syd Barrett and a dash of John Lennon, plus general 60s psychedelia. Revolving mostly around Arnald’s acoustic 12-string guitar, he also swirls in electric guitar, strings, keyboards, and percussion into this trippy concoction. Perhaps the most exotic and ethereal track is the closing song “Annabel Lee” where Arnald sets Edgar Allen Poe’s classic poem to some of the finest gothic outré 60s psych you’ve ever heard, infusing the mix with a spiritual ambiance akin to the finest of Popol Vuh. If this review catches your interest, you can easily experience the absurdly whimsical world of Arnald Paul by searching his name on YouTube (or with the link below).
