Anthony Béard — Les Contes de Nulle Part
(Dur et Doux no#, 2021, CD / DL)

by Henry Schneider, Published 2021-09-05

Les Contes de Nulle Part Cover art

After decades of abusing his guitar in French math rock and avant-garde bands (Diatrib(a), Ni, PoiL, PinioL, etc.) Anthony Béard in 2019 began focusing on a solo project playing classical acoustic guitar. At the same time Anthony began working on surrealistic poetry, with Les Contes de Nulle Part being a fusion of both, the album and track titles coming from his poetic ventures. The album is in effect an extended EP of four instrumentals spanning roughly twenty minutes, consisting of Anthony unaccompanied on acoustic guitar as he picks and strums his way through complex diminished chords. And I cannot help but feel that this is an unfinished work. The music is dreamy and introspective, but seems like Anthony is experimenting with repeated non-melodic musical ideas that go nowhere. Lots of ostinato throughout, without much variation from track to track. This is perfect music for relaxation purposes as it does not demand your attention. But I wish that there were additional instrumentation that would flesh out his compositions.
