Ant-Bee — With My Favorite "Vegetables" and Other Bizarre Muzik
(Divine 3, 1994, CD / LP / MC)
by Rob Walker, Published 1997-05-01
Featuring a handful of early Mothers of Invention personalities and track titles recalling the antics of Frank Zappa's early musical and theatrical explorations, With My Favorite Vegetables delivers very little of what one might expect it to be. Aside from the eccentric 14 minute "A Live Jam," which hardly holds up to the weakest of the early Mothers material, this is basically a chaotic assortment of meager songs and attempts at nostalgia. Interspersed between mostly limpid 60s-ish pop tunes perhaps recalling a bit of the early singles of Floyd, the Who, and the Beach Boys, are brief interview snippets and a few other pieces of weirdness. Motorhead Sherwood, Jimmy Carl Black, Bunk Gardner, and Don Preston share a few memories on the beginnings of the Mothers, while Roy Estrada contributes 12 seconds of "Pachuco Falsetto Laughs." This, along with the jam, is basically their only participation in this album; the rest of the disc is fairly uninteresting pseudo-psychedelic oddness. Perhaps the best track on the album is a one minute long electronic piece by Preston, which has the potential to remind one of Zappa's work if only it lasted longer. This is one you're probably better off forgetting about.
