The Witches of Finnmark Cover art

Due to the success of his recent releases, Apollon Records has reissued Anders Buaas’ debut solo album The Witches of Finnmark on both LP and CD. This debut of six instrumentals is undoubtedly Anders’ best work, which is saying a lot considering the excellence of his other solo albums. His mixture of acoustic and electric guitars along with gothic themes and prog rock engage the listener from the first note to the last. The title track is the standout piece on the album and alternates between calm and aggressive lyrical guitar riffs, augmented by Mellotron and strings. Anders originally wrote this track with vocals in mind, but he found that his guitar passages did not lend themselves to singing. Instead he plays his heart out through his guitar, staying away from clichéd riffs. The music, especially on “Rise,” is reminiscent of Italian prog masters Goblin. The dark mood of The Witches of Finnmark is Anders’ raw and honest expression of his craft and his interpretation of the witch trials. If you enjoy mysterious and lyrical progressive rock that avoids the visceral bombast of horror music, The Witches of Finnmark is for you, as well as an excellent place to start exploring Anders’ musical world.
