Ancient Veil’s 2018 album Rings of Earthly... Live consisted of live recordings from concerts on May 12 and November 11, 2017. Apparently they also performed as an acoustic trio of Alessandro Serri (guitars and vocals), Edmondo Romano (soprano sax, flutes, clarinet, recorders, and low whistle), and Fabio Serri (piano and keyboards) on these same dates at La Claque in Genoa. Then again on January 19, 2019 the trio plus Massimo Palermo (bass), Marco Fuliano (drums), and Marco Gencco (oboe) performed at La Casa di Alex in Milan. The new album Unplugged Live presents eleven selections curated and culled from these three concerts. In addition to the unplugged versions of classics like “Rings of Earthly Light Suite,” there are three previously unreleased songs: “A Cloud Mind,” “Return to the Past,” and “You’ll Become Rain Part Two,” which closes the album. Though not strictly unplugged since they used power for Fabio’s keyboards and synths, the acoustic setting demonstrates that Ancient Veil’s compositions can hold their own without relying on technology. And in this setting, Ancient Veil reminds me even more of Amazing Blondel, and perhaps Gryphon to a lesser extent. If you are interested in some baroque acoustic Italian prog or if you’ve never experienced Ancient Veil, then consider checking out the brilliant companion albums Unplugged Live and Rings of Earthly… Live.
