After a ten-year hiatus, 2084: Viaggio nel Nulla is the new album by the Milanese band Alphataurus. Alphataurus is one of the original Italian progressive bands dating back to 1973 with their debut self-titled album and controversial cover art of the dove (olive branch) fighter jet dropping bombs on the countryside. 2084: Viaggio nel Nulla is Alphataurus’s sixth album, which is approximately one album released per decade. This is a dystopian sci-fi concept album with cover art by the band’s new drummer Diego Mariani, referring back to their debut album and also dedicated to to the memory of three of the founding members who have passed away: bassist Alfonso Oliva who passed in 2022, singer Michele Bavaro, and guitarist Guido Wassermann, both of whom died in 2024. In point of fact Guido’s presence on 2084: Viaggio nel Nulla playing acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, and contributing backing vocals makes this a solid album. The other band members are Pietro Pellegrini (Hammond organ and synths), Franco Giaffreda (lead vocals, guitar, and flute), Andrea Guizzetti (piano, synths, and backing vocals), Diego Mariani (drums, glockenspiel, and backing vocals), and Tony Alemanno (bass guitar). Consisting of six tracks spanning 42 minutes, Alphataurus presents some outstanding Italian prog music that encapsulates their 1973 eponymous masterpiece, their beautiful Atto Secondo (2012), and all of their live appearances for the past 50 years. Emotive vocals, strong Hammond organ riffs, Mellotron, analog synth passages, and inspired lead guitar combine in many different ways with shifting emotions, themes, and tempos, and the final track “E= mc2” is an unexpected strong symphonic feast for your ears. Fans of Italian progressive music are in for a treat with 2084: Viaggio nel Nulla.
