Anyone familiar with the band Farmhouse Odyssey has heard Aaron Laughlin playing guitar and singing, but he’s been producing music on his own as well, honing his craft and releasing tracks on Bandcamp. Lost Coast is a five-track EP running a little over 20 minutes, and it’s a superb example of sophisticated American progressive music. I am often reminded of Jack o’ the Clock without the hammer dulcimer and woodwinds. Most of the arrangements are built around acoustic guitar, though Laughlin utilizes electric guitar, mandolin, bass, and keyboards to present a beautifully varied sound. He also plays drums, both real and electronic, as well as inviting Farmhouse bandmate Thatcher Norton to contribute drums to two tracks. The use of Mellotron sounds is particularly effective when combined with the pristine acoustic guitars. This is lovely, sophisticated music tailor-made for fans of melodic rock that is beautiful but not sappy.
