*.* (aka Star Period Star) is an American progressive indie-rock group founded in Chicago in 1993 by guitarist-vocalist-composer Dan Sweigert. The group released three full length CDs; Star Period Star in 1996, Jet Propulsion Mystery Summer in 1998, and one improvisational CD, The Swivel Neck Justifies the Hand, in 1998. The group split up later that year, reformed in 2001, then reformed again in 2012 in Savannah, Georgia. The new lineup features original members drummer Dan Van Schindel and Sweigert, and two new members, bassist Joe Colone and keyboardist Pat Hamilton (formerly of Sinister Moustache). This new group released another full length CD Can’t See the Forest in November, 2013. Star Period Star are influenced by 70s progressive rock bands King Crimson and Gentle Giant and post-punk bands Sonic Youth and the Melvins among many others. The band also experiments with radical guitar tunings in the tradition of Glenn Branca.
