Bio / info
Lyle David Mays (November 27, 1953 – February 10, 2020) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and founding member of the Pat Metheny Group, for which he composed a significant amount of music. After growing up in rural Wisconsin, Mays ended up at the University of North Texas, which has a well-known jazz program, and his compositions led to his first Grammy nomination in 1975. Mays went on to tour with Woody Herman's Thundering Herd, and began his collaborations with Pat Metheny in 1975. While his solo output was not large, the body of his work with the Metheny Group was substantial and well-regarded; his pieces have been covered by artists as diverse as Milton Nascimento, Zizi Possi, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
