Masabumi Kikuchi (菊地 雅章) was a pianist and composer born in Tokyo in 1939 who died in New York in 2015. As a teenager, he studied music and started buying American jazz records, and started gaining a place in the Japanese jazz scene in the 60s. His first recording as leader dates from 1970, and he investigated the electric styles that were coming into prominence. He moved to New York and worked with many of the premier players in the world, including Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Gary Peacock and Paul Motian. His music was highly individualistic and did not respect boundaries.
