Exposé print issues (1993-2011)
Ahmad Jamal (born Frederick Russell Jones, July 2, 1930) is a jazz pianist and composer, and one of the most successful small-group leaders in the history of jazz. His career began in 1948 when he graduated from high school and started touring with George Hudson's Orchestra. He converted to Islam and changed his name to Ahmad Jamal in 1950, and his first recordings appeared in 1951. In many ways, his style was a stark contrast with the stream of bebop, and came to be known as "cool jazz" for its slower tempos and more accessible sound.
