Yochk'o Seffer — Chromophonie
(Musea FGBG 4184.AR, 1982/1996, CD)
by Dan Casey, Published 1997-05-01
Originally recorded in 1981 and 1982 by (at that time) ex-Zao saxman Seffer as two albums, Musea have wisely compiled almost all of the tracks onto a single CD reissue. This is a solo album in the purest sense of the word — it's almost exclusively Yochk'o playing sax and piano. There is a little bit of clarinet and a little bit of voice thrown in as well, but not much, and a violinist and a keyboardist guest on a couple of tracks, but those too are accents mostly. Musically, Seffer meanders through what are essentially jazz pieces, and very well-done jazz pieces at that. The mood is very light, as you might expect with this minimal line-up. Occasionally Seffer's roots show through and you can detect that hint of Zao in the structures of his compositions that gives this album its historical significance. Don't expect Chromophonie to have a very long shelf life, but it is a worthy reissue and it showcases Seffer in a slightly different light. So, for the Zao fanatic, this is well worth it.
