Tír na nÓg — Transmissions
(Mega Dodo DODOLP37, 2024, LP / DL)

Transmissions Cover art

Transmissions is a set of archival Tír na nÓg recordings made for radio broacasts in the early 70s. The first six songs were recorded in the BBC studio and also appeared on a previous Mega Dodo Tír na nÓg release, Live 1970 -71, but for Transmissions these six tracks were cleaned up and the slimy BBC DJ gushing over the music has been removed to provide a more enjoyable listening experience. The other six tracks were recorded in concert with fairly decent and slightly muffled sound quality, which is amazing for a 50-year-old live recording. The chatter and storytelling between songs provide a more intimate experience, as well as the extremely appreciative audience. The twelve songs, some repeated between the two sets, are from Tír na nÓg’s first self-titled album (1971), except for their acid folk cover of Bob Dylan’s “Maggie’s Farm.” So if you already own the Live 1970-71 set, there is no point in acquiring Transmissions, unless you want a copy specifically remastered for vinyl. This is a limited pressing of 250 copies, so destined to become a collector’s item. If you haven’t experienced the electro-acoustic sound of Tír na nÓg, Transmissions is a great place to start.
