An Introduction to the Honey Pot is the fourth release of Fruits de Mer Records retrospective compilations. The Honey Pot and Crystal Jacqueline have been contributing to the FdM label since its early days and are one of my favorite FdM bands. Band leaders Crystal Jacqueline and Icarus Peel have a myriad number of FdM releases and compilation contributions. Both leaders curated the thirteen tracks on this retrospective, most of which we’ve reviewed over the years. The album starts with their excellent cover of Mighty Baby’s “Egyptian Tomb,” followed by their cover The Fleur de Lys’ “Tick Tock.” Next are four exquisite Honey Pot originals: “Sweet Orange Sunshine,” “Annabella,” “Games for May,” and “Love Is Green.” Then back to covers of the Strawberry Alarm Clock’s “Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow,” Simon Dupree’s “Kites,” Tonton Macoute’s “Dreams,” and Rare Bird’s “Sympathy.” The compilation closes with three bonus tracks:  the original tune “Venice,” a freaky cover of the Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” recorded live in 2022, and a cover of The Kinks’ “Shangri-La” that is exclusive to this compilation. Jacqueline’s hauntingly beautiful voice and Peel’s orchestration and composition skills are on full display here. If you’ve yet to experience The Honey Pot, this retrospective compilation is a great place to start your journey. The Honey Pot is one of the best neo-psych bands performing and recording today.
