An Introduction to the Bevis Frond Cover art

Another Fruits de Mer artist retrospective celebrating 15 years of releasing psychedelia, Krautrock, prog rock, and acid folk tunes classic, long lost and new music is An Introduction to The Bevis Frond. The Bevis Frond is Nick Salomon, whose musical roots date back to the late 60s and early 70s. He began recording as The Bevis Frond in 1987 and is still going strong today at age 71, releasing his 29th album this year, Focus on Nature. Salomon is also the publisher of the psychedelic magazine Ptolemaic Terrascope, published since 1989. Back in 2011 Keith Jones recruited Salomon to contribute some cover tunes. This new retrospective presents fourteen Bevis Frond tunes (covers and Salomon originals) from the FdM catalog plus three unreleased demos that had never found their way onto a release, until now. The excellent and interesting cover tunes are Salomon’s versions of The Seeds’ “Creepin’ About,” The Beatles’ “Glass Onion,” The Hollies’ “Hard Hard Year,” and two Clearlight songs, “Night Sounds Loud” and “Sand.” Salomon is also a consummate songwriter, which is in evidence on the other eleven tracks. The pièce de resistance is Salomon’s 24-minute extravaganza “China,” loosely based on Electric Sandwich’s eight minute track that appeared on four different FdM compilations:  Head Music, Head Quarters, Side Effects, and Kopf Music. The music is quite varied across this retrospective with “Condition Blue” departing from Salomon’s signature psych to reveal a New Wave side to his music. Salomon has followed his own path since the 80s and rightly built a fiercely loyal following over the years and this new retrospective is sure to please his fan base.
