Honey Radar — Sing the Snow Away: The Chunklet Years

Sing the Snow Away: The Chunklet Years Cover art

Sing the Snow Away: The Chunklet Years is a set of 28 rough cut gems lasting for a total of 54 minutes, performed by guitarist Jason Henn. Sing the Snow Away: The Chunklet Years is actually a compilation of material recorded, starting in 2015, for singles on the Atlanta label Chunklet Industries. “Gimme nothing but jams” was Chunklet’s challenge and what Henn submitted is a continuous string of bedroom psych pop brilliance. Henn’s lo-fi garage band output integrates elements as diverse as Syd Barrett, The Monkees, Black Angels, The Bee Gees, very early Zappa, The Swell Maps, and a tiny bit of Joy Division. In addition to the “studio” tracks, there are five live tracks: “Kangaroo Court” on WMFU 5/28/16, ”Lilac Pharmacy” on WFMU 6/25/17, “Paper Car” on WFMU 6/25/17, “The Calvin Coolidge Clarion” on WFMU 6/25/17, “Medium Mary Todd” on WFMU 12/10/19, and “Prole Art Threat” at H2O50, Athens 11/29/18. Given that most of the tracks last about two minutes, there is barely enough time to develop ideas before the track ends. There is a ton of unrealized potential here and Sing the Snow Away: The Chunklet Years is more of a sketch book than a fully fleshed out album. If you are a fan of avant-pop-psych you might find this album interesting.
