The White Kites — Missing
(Deep Field Records no#, 2013, CD)

by Henry Schneider, Published 2014-06-29

Missing Cover art I was pleasantly surprised by this new Polish band. I thought that I would be hearing music like some of the other contemporary Polish bands like Riverside, Turquoise, or Lebowski. Instead I heard a set of twelve charming Brit psych pop songs harkening back to the 60s and 70s. And to complete the picture, the vocals are song in unaccented English, so you would never be able to guess the origin of this band. There are many different influences percolating throughout the disc from Gong, Dr. Strangely Strange, Syd-era Pink Floyd, Camel, and Genesis sans Gabriel or Collins, as well as The Beatles and The Kinks. The songs tie together themes associated with man’s search for something important (love, identity, adventure, soul mates, and new lands) incorporating various styles ranging from music hall to folk psych to pop psych. This is a magical album replete with many different ideas. Another surprise was the song “Beyond the Furthest Star” that starts out very quiet, slowly evolving through Camel, and suddenly suggests “MacArthur Park,” of all things! Then there is “Turtle’s Back” that starts out in a strong rock mode that takes a sudden turn into trippy experimental and eerie territory much like the Stones were dabbling in on Their Satanic Majesties Request. So, throw your cares away, slip on your headphones, and take a magical mystery tour with The White Kites!
